Rainy Day Activities

Bad weather may be a blessing in disguise during your visit. Whether you run into a sudden downpour, have a spare day or want some simple downtime, there is something new for you to discover in the Glen.

Beneath you will see a list of activities organised by location. Please note that inclusion does not constitute a recommendation by the Rangers or by The Highland Council. Please contact the businesses directly for more information and always remember to check opening times before you visit. We cannot hope to include all businesses here - for a complete list please contact local tourism organisations or VisitScotland.

 Fort William

 Nevis Centre
With pool, ten pin bowling, arcade games and a soft play area, it's easy for the whole family to relax at the Nevis Centre.

 Nevis Range
Travel up into the heart of the Nevis mountains by gondola and experience the Discovery Centre and a restaurant with stunning views.

 Spean Bridge Woollen Mill
Come and visit the gift shop with friendly restaurant in the charming village of Spean Bridge. There is also an interesting weaving exhibition. 

 West Highland Museum
Learn all about the interesting history of the West Highlands, and don't miss the world-famous Jacobite exhibition in particular.

 Loch Lochy and Loch Oich

 Clan Cameron Museum, Gairlochy
Based in Achnacarry House, come and find out about the history of Clan Cameron and the WW2 Army commando training base.

 Commando Memorial, Spean Bridge
Drive to this impressively situated monument and spot mountains on the Nevis Range skyline whilst enjoying an 'old school style' picnic inside the car.

 Great Glen Water Park, South Laggan
If you're going to get wet, you might as well make the most of it. Outdoor and indoor water-based activities, as well as many others.

 Glengarry Heritage Centre, Invergarry
Based in Invergarry community centre, this exhibition teaches you about the history of Glen Garry. Cafe also on site.

 Letterfinlay Lodge Hotel, A82
Restaurant on the banks of Loch Lochy. The sun-deck (or rain-deck!) is also very nice if you've brought your waterproofs!
 

 Fort Augustus

 Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre
 Learn all about the history of the Canal from friendly British Waterways staff, and watch lockings through the window if it's raining.

 Clansman Centre
A wide variety of Scottish crafts and examples of traditional Scottish armoury.

 Great Glen Trading Centre
Wide variety of all manner of gifts and Nessie objects. The garage shop adjacent has everything from Oreos to oven cleaner, so is a good place to restock and refuel. 

 The Bothy
Traditional lock-side stone pub serving a wide variety of whiskies and traditional Scottish fare.

 Loch Ness

 Clog and Craft Shop, Invermoriston
If you're looking for clogs, leather goods and other crafts then this is a great place to visit. Also see taxidermy, horns and hides. Gifts available.

 General Wade's Military Road, B862
Drive along one of the region's historic roads, built by General Wade in the early 18th century to improve access to the region and thereby control the disruptive Scots. Some excellent views are to be had of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and of the Monadhliath Mountains at the Suidhe viewpoint.

 Glenmoriston Millennium Hall, Invermoriston
The hall has a wide variety of activities on throughout the year, including ceilidhs, lunch lite bites and bowling.

 Dores Inn, Dores
The only inn on the south side of Loch Ness. Large selection of whiskies and local food, with spectacular views of Loch Ness.

 Waterfall Cafe, Foyers
 Newly refurbished cafe - there has been a cafe on this site for over 100yrs! Stop for refreshments and, if you're feeling brave, cross the road and make the short trip down to see the famous Falls of Foyers - some of the most impressive waterfalls in the region and especially spectacular after rainfall!

 Drumnadrochit

 Fiddler's Highland Restaurant
Home to the famous Great Glen ale (goes straight to your feet) and a menu of over 600 malt whiskies, as well as traditional Scottish food.

 Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition Experience
An award-winning scientific look at Loch Ness, its history and its ecology.

 Nessieland Castle
A fun and entertaining look at the Nessie legend. Includes visitor centre and cinema.

 Urquhart Castle
Although the castle is mostly a ruin, the indoors visitor centre run by Historic Scotland will provide a welcome and informative break from the weather.

 Inverness

 Floral Hall 
An indoor botanical garden featuring ponds and waterfalls. Cafe on site.

 Highland Aviation Museum
Sit in the pilot's seat and try on WW2 flight jackets, gas masks and uniforms at this informative exhibition.

 Holm Mills Shopping Village
Visit the Highland Life Weaving Exhibition, based on the James Pringle weaving centre established here in 1798. Gifts available also.

 Tazball Paintball and Lazertag Arena
Just outside Inverness is Tazball, featuring 16 different paintball fields and 4 different lazertag arenas and run by an highly experienced team. Largest paintball venue in the north.

 Tomatin Distillery
Tours, DVD presentation and taster sessions from Scotland's highest working distillery.
